Osaka Castle’s Nishinomaru Garden is a vast lawn garden of approximately 20,000 tsubo on the west side of Osaka Castle. This garden offers a beautiful view of Osaka Castle’s castle tower, and is also famous as a cherry blossom viewing spot, with approximately 300 cherry blossom trees in full bloom in spring. The residence of Kita no Mandokoro (Nene), Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s legal wife, was also located in Nishinomaru.
From Nishinomaru Garden, you can enjoy a beautiful view of Osaka Castle’s castle tower.
On the south side of the Nishinomaru garden was the residence (official residence) of the Osaka castle lord, an important official in the shogunate who was in charge of the defense and maintenance of Osaka Castle during the Edo period.
It was destroyed in a fire during the Meiji Restoration and is now a plaza. The entrance facing east was built in a traditional style, and included not only a hall and study hall where official duties were conducted, but also a building where the castle’s wives and children lived, making it the second largest palace after the Honmaru Goten.
In the Nishinomaru Garden, there is a tea room called Toyoshoan(japanese: 豊松庵), which was donated by Konosuke Matsushita.
It is said that the Osaka Castle tower seen through the Karesansui (Japanese garden, japanese: 枯山水) built in the garden of Toyoshoan is the most beautiful view.
Currently, Toyoshoan is not open to the public and is mainly used as a waiting room for the bride and groom and their families. Occasionally, you may be able to enter the restaurant by reservation during special public events.
The Osaka State Guest House was built in 1995 to host the world leaders of APEC in Osaka. It is known for its formal architectural style modeled after Kyoto’s Nijo Castle Hakushoin. Later, it was used as a banquet venue for his G20 Osaka Summit in 2019, attracting attention from all over the world.
Currently, it is mainly used for weddings and parties. It may be available as a restaurant for a limited time.
Located in the Nishinomaru Garden of Osaka Castle, the Enshogura(japanese: 焔碵蔵) is a stone storehouse where the Tokugawa shogunate stored gunpowder during the Edo period. Built in 1685, its distinctive stonework is fireproof, durable and waterproof.
A stone gunpowder magazine is rare nationwide. Osaka Castle was a military base for the Shogunate in western Japan, and this storehouse functioned as part of it. Enshozo is made of granite, and the walls, floor, ceiling, and beams are all covered with this durable material. Under the approximately 2.4 meter thick stone walls and roof made of earth, the building is designed to safely store gunpowder.
