More Than Just a Park: Discover the Astonishing Space by JR Osaka Station!
At the gateway to Osaka, JR Osaka Station, an incredible sight has spread across its northern side since September 2024.
Yes, one of the world’s largest urban parks has been born – “Umekita Park.”
Who could have imagined such a vast green space emerging in the heart of Osaka’s premium district? With the skyscrapers of Umeda forming a stunning backdrop, this park offers a picture-perfect urban landscape that Tokyo, Yokohama, or Nagoya cannot replicate. It is a uniquely Osaka landmark.
When I first heard about this park, I was skeptical. Could such an expansive park really exist in one of Japan’s most expensive areas? But when I visited, the view took my breath away.
Let me share with you the many charms of Umekita Park. For those of us living in Osaka, its creation is nothing short of a miracle.

On September 6, 2024, Grand Green Osaka opened in Kita Ward, Osaka City, north of JR Osaka Station. At its core is Umekita Park, recognized as one of the world’s largest urban parks directly connected to a terminal station, making it a new landmark for Osaka.
Look at this vastness! This premium space is located just steps away from JR Osaka Station.
A Green Oasis in the Urban Jungle
Umekita Park occupies about half of the 9-hectare Grand Green Osaka area, making it a sprawling green space. Amid Osaka’s reputation for limited greenery, this park features trees native to the region, harmonizing with its urban surroundings.
With fountains adding a refreshing touch, visitors can enjoy a serene atmosphere. Despite being adjacent to skyscrapers, the park achieves a remarkable visual balance.
A Stage for Everyone: Roto Heart Square Umekita
Umekita Park boasts the Roto Heart Square Umekita, a 1,500-square-meter, all-weather event space.
Used for events and concerts, it serves as a public rest area when not in use. Stepping inside, you’ll find it impressively spacious.
Though limited in number, tables and chairs are available, offering a comfortable resting space.
The view of Umeda from here is soothing. The combination of greenery and cityscape feels just right. To enjoy this experience so close to Osaka Station is a true luxury.
Perfect for Families: Experience the Freedom of Open Spaces
Umekita Park is remarkably vast. Just look at its dynamic scale – it’s hard to capture it all in a single photo.
With such a large lawn area, children are bound to love it. On the day of my visit, many kids were running around joyfully, while adults were relaxing, appreciating the contrast between nature and the urban landscape.
In the distance, you can spot the Umeda Sky Building, famous for its observatory offering breathtaking views of Osaka at night. From the park, even this iconic structure becomes part of the scenery.
The sight of this solitary skyscraper amidst the greenery is reminiscent of a fantastical scene. It almost feels like something out of a painting, and that’s part of the charm.
Breathtaking Sunset Views: A Unique Urban Landscape Experience
While the daytime atmosphere is wonderful, visiting in the evening is actually recommended.
The sprawling greenery at your feet, towering buildings ahead, and the sunset reflecting off them - the evening scenery offers a unique urban landscape that can only be experienced at Umekita Park.
As you can see in the photo, while there are quite a few people around, the park remains pleasantly quiet. Everyone seems to be enjoying this wonderful atmosphere in front of this stunning view. It’s no wonder people find themselves captivated.
Exciting Regular Events Including Winter Christmas Market!
One of the highlights is the events held at LOFT HEART Square. For instance, during the Christmas season, they host a festive Christmas market.
The venue is well-equipped for cold weather, with heaters installed throughout. Enjoying a meal with your loved ones amidst Christmas illuminations and grassy park views creates an unforgettable experience.
