Long ago, while traveling with his companions, Benkei encountered an oni (demon) near Kinpoku Mountain on Sado Island. The demon challenged Benkei to a test of strength.

Accepting the challenge, Benkei lifted a giant rock and hurled it as if tossing a ball. The rock flew over 10 kilometers to its current location in Shimoaikawa, embedding itself in the ground.

Kinpoku Mountain lies in the northern-central part of Sado Island, approximately 10–12 kilometers from Benkei’s Scissors Rock. The legend of throwing such an enormous rock over such a distance is astounding in itself.
