If you’re seeking more than just a typical tourist spot in Naruto, Escahill Naruto is the place to visit.
Perched on a hill, this observatory offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Naruto Strait and the Great Naruto Bridge. One of the unique features is the outdoor escalator that takes you up to the observatory—and it’s no ordinary escalator.
In this article, we’ll explore the highlights of Escahill Naruto, how to enjoy your time on-site, and tips for accessing the facility.
Escahill Naruto is an observatory facility located in Naruto City, Tokushima Prefecture. It is popular for its spectacular views of the Great Naruto Bridge and Naruto Strait, and features a long escalator, café, and souvenir shop.
Category | Fee |

Once at the top, you’re treated to sweeping views of the Naruto Strait and the Great Naruto Bridge. The contrast between the 1,629-meter-long bridge and the swirling tides below creates a dramatic scene.
From the spacious rooftop deck, you can see as far as Awaji Island, the Kii Peninsula, and even the distant horizon on a clear day.
If you visit during a whirlpool viewing time, you may be able to spot the swirling vortexes on the ocean surface with the naked eye. Use the paid binoculars for an even closer look at tour boats and tide movements.
Standing on the open-air deck, you’ll not only “see” the view—you’ll truly “feel” the natural elements around you.
Next to the observatory is another observation deck, accessible on foot from Senjojiki via a short climb.
You can also reach it from Escahill’s fourth floor before entering the observatory. However, the door is auto-locked, and once you exit, you cannot return through it. You’ll need to descend via the trail back to Senjojiki, not the escalator.
The iconic feature of Escahill Naruto is its 68-meter-long escalator connecting the ground level to the observatory. With a 34-meter elevation difference—equivalent to an 11-story building—it is one of the longest outdoor escalators at a tourist site in Japan.
Standing at the bottom, you’ll be amazed by how far it stretches upward. The gentle ascent gives a surreal sensation—as if you’re being pulled into the sky.
Some parts of the ride take you through tree-lined areas, making the journey itself an enjoyable nature experience. Escalators are available in both directions, ensuring smooth movement.
Escahill features an on-site café called Cafe Park Inn, offering light meals and sweets. Conveniently located at the entrance, the café is open to all—no admission fee required.
The menu includes items like udon noodles, croquettes, soft-serve ice cream, zenzai (sweet red bean soup), and various drinks.
Among the most popular items are “Naruto Wakame Udon” and “Naruto Kintoki Sweet Potato Soft Serve”—local specialties that give you a taste of the region.
A souvenir shop at the Escahill entrance sells local Tokushima products.
It’s an ideal stop after exploring Naruto Park, offering a wide variety of regional goods.
Top-selling items include “Naruto Wakame” seaweed and sweets made with the sweet and fluffy “Naruto Kintoki” sweet potatoes. You’ll also find juice and dressing made with Tokushima’s famous sudachi citrus.
With such a wide variety, this is a great place to grab souvenirs while at Naruto Park.
Right in front of Escahill Naruto is the Naruto Main Parking Lot, offering immediate access to the facility with minimal walking—ideal for travelers by car.
The same parking lot is also convenient for the “Uzu no Michi” walkway and the Onaruto Bridge Memorial Museum “Eddy.”
The main lot accommodates standard vehicles and motorcycles (¥500 and ¥200, respectively). During peak tourist seasons, it can get crowded, but second and third lots are also available within Naruto Park.
Public transport is also a good option—the Tokushima Bus “Naruto Park” stop is about a 5-minute walk from Escahill. Its convenient location makes it easy to include on a sightseeing itinerary along with other attractions like Uzu no Michi and Senjojiki.

It’s easily accessible by car or public transit and works well with a visit to other Naruto Park attractions.
