A Cafe Experience Only Kaiyukan Can Offer — Surrounded by the Ocean and the Deep Sea

Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan is the largest aquarium in Osaka.

After spending over an hour exploring exhibit after exhibit, fatigue was starting to set in as my visit neared its end.

Right at that perfect moment, a cafe appeared — and that cafe is the star of this article: R.O.F.

With Osaka Bay outside the windows and a deep-sea tank just behind you, here is a cafe nestled in a space between two seas.

Cafe R.O.F is located inside the paid exhibition area on the 4th floor of Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan. The name R.O.F stands for Ring of Fire — the Pacific Ring of Fire, the volcanic belt encircling the Pacific Ocean. Kaiyukan’s exhibits are themed around this very concept, and the cafe takes its name from it.

A Whale Shark Bursting Through the Wall! A Striking Trick Art Welcome

As you step inside the cafe entrance, something catches your eye on the wall ahead. A whale shark breaking through the wall!?

It is actually trick art so nothing is really bursting through, but the effect is striking. It truly looks like it is leaping right out of the painting, doesn’t it? This is also a great spot for a photo.

Nothing but Ocean Beyond the Window! Counter Seats Overlooking Osaka Bay

The cafe has large windows, and the counter seats along them offer a sweeping view of Osaka Bay — a refreshing spot to take a break.

On a clear day, the sense of openness is wonderful. Wide skies, blue waters. You can sit back and take in the bay area scenery at your own pace.

Japanese Spider Crabs Right Before Your Eyes! Relax by the Deep-Sea Tank

Another highlight of this cafe is the seating by the Japan Deep tank.

The tank sits right in front of the counter, giving you an up-close view of Japanese spider crabs — the largest crabs in the world, with leg spans reaching up to 3.7 meters — slowly moving their long legs, along with deep-sea fish drifting by.

A 38 cm Hot Dog, Whale Shark Soft Serve, and a Whale Shark Latte! A Playful Menu

The menu at Cafe R.O.F is full of aquarium-inspired creativity. Light bites center around soft serve, hot dogs, and drinks.

The standout is the Spotted Garden Eel Dog (Chin’anago Dog) — a 38 cm (15-inch) long hot dog inspired by the slender shape of the spotted garden eel, available in limited quantities daily. Then there is the Whale Shark Soft Serve (Jinbe Soft), combining ramune soda flavor and vanilla — the signature item named after Kaiyukan’s beloved whale sharks.

The Signature Whale Shark Soft Serve — A Refreshing Ramune and Vanilla Treat

The star of the menu at Cafe R.O.F: Whale Shark Soft Serve (Jinbe Soft) at ¥530.

Blue (ramune soda flavor) and white (vanilla) swirl together in a spiral, designed to resemble the whale shark’s grayish-blue body and white spotted pattern. Tiny white and silver ramune candy beads are scattered across the surface, making it as charming to look at as it is to eat.

A lick of the blue cream fills your mouth with the refreshing taste of ramune soda — a clean, light sweetness with a crisp finish. The white cream, on the other hand, brings a rich and creamy vanilla flavor.

Each flavor is delightful on its own, but take a bite of both together, and the refreshing ramune and mellow vanilla meld into something truly special.

Then there are the ramune candy toppings. Bite into them and you get a satisfying crunch that contrasts beautifully with the smooth soft serve. They may be tiny, but they add a lovely accent in both flavor and texture.
