Sky-High Foot Bath Overlooking Sagami Bay

The biggest draw of Tenbo Ashiyu Teien is the chance to enjoy stunning views while soaking your feet. Step into the foot bath, settle onto the bench, and Sagami Bay and the Odawara cityscape stretch out right in front of you.

The foot bath is laid out lengthwise along the observation deck, so plenty of guests can soak their feet and take in the scenery at the same time. As a popular spot, you may have to wait briefly during busy hours, but the bath itself is large, so long waits are rare.

The water is kept at a slightly cooler temperature of about 40°C (104°F), so you are unlikely to overheat and can relax for a while as you take in the view. Rounded stones are arranged across the bottom of the bath, and resting your feet on them gives the soles a gentle massage—a nice extra touch.

The bath itself is covered by a roof, so you can use it on rainy days without bringing an umbrella.
Hakone Yumoto’s Natural Hot Spring: A Historic Skin-Beautifying Bath

The water at Tenbo Ashiyu Teien comes from a natural hot spring in Hakone Yumoto. It is an alkaline simple hot spring, gentle on the skin and silky to the touch—the kind of water known in Japan as bijin no yu or bihada no yu, literally “beauty bath” or “skin-beautifying hot spring.” The water is delivered to Odawara from the source by tank truck.
Hakone Yumoto is the oldest hot spring district in the wider Hakone hot spring region. Its springs are said to have first opened in 738 AD, during the Nara period (710–794). In the Edo period (1603–1868), Hakone Yumoto was counted among the Hakone Nanayu (the Seven Hot Springs of Hakone), and its waters were even sent as tribute to the Tokugawa shogun family while the area itself thrived as a destination for toji (long-stay hot spring therapy). That same historic water can now be enjoyed right here in Odawara.
For longer soaks, the hotel Tenseien Odawara Station Annex on floors 10 to 13 of Minaka Odawara also uses this water in its large communal bath. Tenseien is a long-established hot spring inn in Hakone Yumoto with around 80 years of history. It is well known for its 17-meter-long (about 56 feet) “Tenku Sky Open-Air Bath,” a famed open-air pool where bathers feel at one with nature.
Sweeping Panoramic Views from About 50 Meters Up
Tenbo Ashiyu Teien sits on the 14th floor of Minaka Odawara, about 50 meters (about 165 feet) above the ground. The 14th floor is a rooftop space, and beyond the foot bath itself, the observation deck stretches out as a viewing spot for the Odawara scenery.

To the east lies the deep blue expanse of Sagami Bay. The Manazuru Peninsula curves gently to the south, and on clear days, you can even see as far as the Miura Peninsula.

Look west, and you will see the ridge of the Hakone caldera and the mountains around Yugawara and Manazuru. Turn south, and the main tower of Odawara Castle rises into view.

After enjoying the foot bath, take a stroll along the deck and soak in the Odawara scenery. The visibility is excellent, making this a highly recommended part of the visit.

A Magical Evening: Light-Up and Night Views
After sunset, Tenbo Ashiyu Teien shows a completely different face from its daytime look.
Blue lights set into the rim of the bath illuminate the surface of the water with a soft, shimmering glow. The gently rippling blue water creates a dreamlike atmosphere across the entire rooftop.
Look out beyond the railing, and the city lights of Odawara sparkle below. If you are lucky, you may also catch the illuminated main tower of Odawara Castle.

You can enjoy Tenbo Ashiyu Teien without bringing anything of your own. A towel vending machine is set up near the entrance, with towels priced at ¥100 each (cash only).

You can return the used towel on the spot, so you do not have to add a damp towel to your bag.

Three Tips for Enjoying Tenbo Ashiyu Teien Comfortably
Here are three practical tips I picked up from my own visit.
Wear Something You Can Roll Up to the Knee
The water is deep enough to cover the calves. Tight jeans or tights can be hard to roll up or take off, so easy-to-remove shoes and socks together with pants you can roll up to the knee will make things go smoothly.

Bringing Your Own Towel Saves Money
You can buy a towel from the vending machine for ¥100 each, but bringing one from home saves you the cost and the trouble of buying one. If you are visiting with family or several friends, the cost adds up per person, so packing towels can mean real savings. Note that the vending machine towels are quite thin—even when shared, one is barely enough to dry the feet of two adults.
Use the Coin Lockers if You Have a Lot of Luggage
Tenbo Ashiyu Teien does not provide a luggage area, so it can be tricky to find a place for your belongings. A suitcase can simply be left next to the bench while you bathe, but with several bags, holding everything in your lap is not realistic. Setting them on the floor risks splashes from the water.

In that case, use the coin lockers. They are installed in front of the dedicated 14th-floor elevator (on the 3rd floor of Minaka Odawara). Three sizes are available at ¥400, ¥500, and ¥700. Drop your bags off before heading up, and you can relax in the foot bath unburdened.

Take the Dedicated Elevator to the 14th Floor
To reach Tenbo Ashiyu Teien, you need to use the dedicated elevator inside the building. The regular escalators and the elevators serving the general floors of Minaka Odawara do not go up to the 14th floor.

The dedicated elevator is located just inside the entrance to the restaurant floor on the 3rd floor. A large white lantern with the word “Odawara” hangs nearby as a landmark. The coin lockers are also right here.

Views, Hot Spring, and Foot Bath—All Free: A Special Time at Tenbo Ashiyu Teien

On the rooftop of Minaka Odawara’s 14th floor, looking out over Sagami Bay, you can soak your feet in genuine natural hot spring water carried in from Hakone Yumoto. Views, hot spring water, and a foot bath all come together in one place—and the entire experience is free. That place is Tenbo Ashiyu Teien.
On clear days, you can see all the way past Sagami Bay to the Miura Peninsula. On rainy days, the covered foot bath still lets you take your time. After sunset, the blue-lit water and the city lights below come together to create a dreamlike night scene.
A rooftop steps from the station where you can experience the warmth of real hot spring water alongside views of Odawara’s sea, mountains, and castle—all in one place. Tenbo Ashiyu Teien offers a special kind of time that is at once casual and indulgent.
Make some room in your itinerary for Tenbo Ashiyu Teien and enjoy a relaxing soak with the Odawara landscape spread out before you.
