Located in Fujinomiya City, Shizuoka Prefecture, “Fumotoppara Campground” is a popular campground spread out at the foot of majestic Mount Fuji. Its vast grounds of about 700,000 square meters offer numerous open free sites with a full view of Mount Fuji, allowing visitors to fully enjoy camping in the great outdoors.
It took about 30 minutes by car from Koan Campground.
You pass through Asagiri Highland, so if you plan to stop at Michi-no-Eki Asagiri Highland along the way, you may want to allow a bit more time.
Going by car is recommended, but it’s also possible to get there by taking trains and buses.
In that case, take the Fujikyuko Bus from Kawaguchiko Station or Fujinomiya Station. Get off at the “Asagiri Green Park” bus stop and walk to Fumotoppara Campground.
There is some distance from the bus stop to the entrance of Fumotoppara Campground. It’s a 2 km walk of about 30 minutes.
Fumotoppara Campground is located at an elevation of 830m.
Due to the high elevation, a bit of caution is needed regarding temperatures. When I visited, it was like this:
Fumotoppara is very wide open with nothing blocking the wind in any direction, so the wind is strong. Keep this in mind when preparing clothes too.
So for a solo car camping trip, it costs 3,000 yen per night.
You can park your car right next to your tent. Feel free to set up and park freely while maintaining proper distance from your neighbors.
Respect each other’s private areas when setting up
Open fires directly on the ground are prohibited. Always use a dedicated fire stand for campfires.
Since the ground is grassland, be sure to put a fire-resistant mat under your fire stand.
The management building is located at the entrance to the campground.
Garbage bags can be purchased at this management building.
Drinks, souvenirs, and consumable camping supplies are also available for purchase.
Firewood can be purchased at the management building. Both softwood and hardwood are sold all-you-can-pack for 500 yen per bag.
All-you-can-pack firewood
The all-you-can-pack bags are purchased from the vending machine in front of the management building.
If you purchase the designated garbage bags, they will collect your sorted waste. The bags are sold at the shop in the management building or the vending machine out front. (100 yen per 45L bag)
The garbage collection point is either ① or ② depending on the time. (When it’s ②, there are standing signs on the road)
The closest store to Fumotoppara Campground is a convenience store, with a FamilyMart about a 2-minute drive away.
Go about another 2-3 minutes by car toward downtown Fujinomiya from FamilyMart and there is a 7-Eleven.
There are no large supermarkets in the immediate vicinity of Fumotoppara Campground. You need to go into Fujinomiya city.
Assuming you head into Fujinomiya, the closest large supermarkets are as follows. (About a 30-minute drive)
Super Market Valor Misonodaira and MaxValue Fujinomiya Miyahara are only about a 2-minute drive apart.
Both supermarkets are large stores where you can find all kinds of food and drinks.
This is a large public bath. While the campground has a free large bath, it may not always be open depending on the day, in which case this is the closest bathing facility to the campground.
It’s a small shop but the food is delicious.
In addition to Fujinomiya yakisoba, they also had Shizuoka oden and more.
Makai Farm is famous for its gelato. It was also featured in the anime “Yurucamp”.
The shop has an eat-in space inside.
They have several flavors of gelato with options like double scoops and more.
I had a double scoop of milk and Shizuoka matcha.
If you’re heading back toward Tokyo by car, there’s a delicious udon shop before getting on the Fujiyoshida IC.
The restaurant is spacious but always crowded as it’s a popular spot. During lunch hours, lines form for people waiting their turn.
Fumotoppara Campground is a place every camping enthusiast dreams of visiting. You can enjoy camping while taking in the grand scenery of Mount Fuji towering right in front of you.
Fumotoppara Campground is known for the high-quality natural spring water that flows from the blessings of Mount Fuji. The campground also has well-equipped facilities such as a cooking area, toilets, showers and more, providing a comfortable camping environment for everyone from beginners to advanced campers.
