[Additional verification/Temperature 2℃] Can Mont-bell's sleeping bag "Down Hugger 800 #3" withstand the autumn cold?

This is an additional verification of the previous verification article “Verifying whether Mont-bell’s sleeping bag “Down Hugger 800 #3” can withstand the autumn cold”.

(Please note that temperatures in this article are expressed in Celsius.)

The previous verification had a minimum temperature of 6 degrees Celsius.

This verification will be conducted at a minimum temperature of 2℃.

Equipment and clothing are the same as the previous verification.

Weather/Temperature

The stage for this test is Yamanashi Prefecture in late November.

Weather/temperature forecast for November 21st Weather/temperature forecast for November 22nd

verification

It was midnight when I returned to the tent and got into my sleeping bag. The temperature at that time was 4.7℃.

Temperature as of midnight is 4.7℃

The temperature is such that it feels very cold to be outside without a bonfire.

When I returned to the tent and climbed into my sleeping bag, I felt warm.

Of course, I took off my coat and put it in my sleeping bag. Being warm in a tent without a bonfire means that the potential of the Down Hugger 800 #3 is no problem.

The lowest temperature is before sunrise

The lowest temperature was at 6 a.m., just before sunrise.

Temperature at 6am is 2.2℃

It was getting light outside, so I got out of my sleeping bag and decided to go outside the tent.

Although it was warm inside the sleeping bag, it was extremely cold when I stepped outside.

Even though I feel comfortable inside my sleeping bag, the temperature outside of my sleeping bag changes to the point where I am unable to function.

In other words, at 2 degrees Celsius, the Down Hugger 800 #3 functioned well as a sleeping bag.

Texture of down sleeping bag

If you are purchasing a down sleeping bag for the first time, please be aware of this.

The outer material of the comforters and blankets we usually use when sleeping in bed is cloth or brushed material.

On the other hand, the outer part of the down hugger that touches the body is smooth. (The same goes for many down sleeping bag)

Sleeping bag texture

I believe that the reason why smooth materials such as polyester materials are used is because the emphasis is on lightness and portability.

Due to the different texture of the outer material, the feeling of warmth is different from regular comforters. I think that the difference in feel is due to the fact that it does not fit your body in the same way as a comforter or blanket.

However, this point is important: the air between your body and the sleeping bag is heated by your own body temperature, and by keeping it warm, the inside of the sleeping bag becomes warm. In other words, it is better to have some air inside the sleeping bag.

The principle of warmth for comforters and blankets is basically the same, but in the case of blankets, for example, the air between each fine brushed material is insulated and retained. Therefore, it is better to make the blanket fit as closely to your body as possible to keep you warm.

Strictly speaking, there is a difference between a down sleeping bag and a blanket in the structure that keeps them warm.

Increase warmth with heat sources other than body temperature

Sleeping bag

Sleeping bags retain your body heat and keep you warm, but sometimes that isn’t enough to keep you warm.

In such cases, placing a heat source other than your own body temperature inside your sleeping bag will greatly improve warmth.

The most recommended is hot water bottle.

Sleeping bag + hot water bottle is the strongest combination I know.

If you are unsure about the specs of the sleeping bag you currently have or the sleeping bag you are planning to purchase, try using them together.

Also, if you have cold feet and can’t sleep, we also recommend the [down tent shoes] (/posts/9) that I introduced earlier.

inspection result

Even at 2 degrees Celsius, the Montbell Down Hugger 800 #3 worked well and kept me warm.

However, since I’m sensitive to cold, I avoided getting cold feet by sleeping in down tent shoes.

Since there are individual differences in the environment, such as temperature and conditions inside the tent, body temperature, chronic illness, etc., be sure to prepare enough heat sources such as clothing and hot water bottles to ensure that you are warm enough. Please do.

We hope this review will be helpful in choosing your sleeping bag.
