Brilliant Blue: Cobalt Blue Hot Spring Reminiscent of a Tropical Sea

The highlight of Umi Jigoku is undoubtedly this cobalt blue hot spring that evokes images of a tropical sea.

Despite its beauty, this is not the sea but a hot spring. The rising steam and billowing vapors are what make it a “hell.”

The water quality of Umi Jigoku is acidic with a temperature of about 98°C. The depth to the hot spring source is over 200 meters.

The cobalt blue color of the water surface is due to the ferrous sulfate contained in the hot spring components. The highly transparent hot spring water and ferrous sulfate react with sunlight to create this mystical blue color.

Hakuryu Inari Okami Shrine

Right next to the cobalt blue hell stands Hakuryu Inari Okami, a shrine believed to bring blessings for household safety, business prosperity, and traffic safety.
