A Classic Japanese Izakaya Atmosphere

There’s one tatami seating area that can accommodate about 4 people, but the main seating is at the counter. Since counter seating is the focus, it’s great for solo diners who can feel comfortable visiting alone.

The interior has that quintessential izakaya atmosphere, bringing a sense of nostalgia and comfort. It’s cozy, clean, and well-maintained throughout.

The Specialty: Tomato Spicy Noodles

Narabiya’s signature dish is the “Tomato Karamen” (Tomato Spicy Noodles).

They even offer a half-size portion, which is perfect for finishing off your meal.

Narabiya offers a “Banshaku Set” - one drink and one appetizer for just 1,300 yen, making it a great value.

For example, if you ordered a draft beer and Oita’s famous Toriten separately:

680 + 780 = 1,460 yen

So ordering the Banshaku Set saves you 160 yen.

Light and Fluffy: The Must-Try Oita Specialty Toriten

The dish I highly recommend from Narabiya’s menu is their Toriten.

Fluffy Toriten served with shredded cabbage, cucumber, and tomato

This is truly delicious! So fluffy and tender, it practically melts in your mouth the moment you take a bite!

Toriten is one of Oita Prefecture’s signature dishes.

I’ve tried it at many places, but Narabiya’s Toriten is a cut above the rest.

Enjoy it with kabosu ponzu sauce to taste.

Finally, Narabiya is run by a husband-and-wife team, and both are incredibly kind people who made me feel very welcome as a traveler.

Sure, the restaurant is compact. But that’s exactly why there’s plenty of opportunity to chat with the owners and enjoy a wonderful time. It’s a great perk for solo visitors.

It’s incredibly close at just a 2-minute walk from Beppu Station, and the Oita specialty Toriten is exceptional.

Most visitors to Beppu tend to stay near Beppu Station, so this place should be easy to access.

When you visit Beppu, be sure to stop by.
