In this article, we introduce nighthawks.

Blue and Yellow: A Wine Bar Beneath the Tracks

Walking along the 2nd-floor corridor of Shin-Umeda Shokudogai, one storefront immediately stands out.

Blue walls adorned with yellow silhouettes of people. Handwritten posters line the entrance, including one that reads Solo visitors welcome! In the retro corridors of Shin-Umeda Shokudogai, this spot feels like a world of its own.

Step through the door and a marble-style counter stretches out before you.

The ceiling is painted black, and the walls are a striking two-tone of blue and yellow. Wine glasses dangle from ceiling hangers, while whiskey and gin bottles crowd the shelves behind the counter.

The 15-seat counter is compact, but that closeness means easy conversation with the owner. Ask about any drink and you will likely get an enthusiastic story in return.

A Menu Full of Character: From Wine to Hearty Meat Dishes

Start Here: The Senbero Hawks Set

When visiting nighthawks, the must-try first order is the Senbero Hawks Set (¥1,000). The name comes from senbero — a beloved Japanese concept meaning getting happily tipsy for around 1,000 yen (about $7 USD), combined with the hawks from nighthawks.

The set pairs house-made roast beef with a glass of the owners recommended wine (your choice of red or white) — the quintessential nighthawks experience.

The roast beef reveals a beautiful pink cross-section that whets the appetite. Each bite delivers rich, savory meat flavor. The sauce is light and clean — never overpowering. A perfect opening dish.

Then comes the wine pairing.

The owners curated wine alongside house-made roast beef. This single glass and plate tell you everything about what nighthawks is all about.

The Signature Dish: A Massive Pork Steak

If there is one dish nighthawks is known for, it is the pork steak.

A thick slab of pork steak glistening with a savory glaze, served on a white plate with fresh greens and whole-grain mustard. At ¥800, it is genuinely a steal.

Slide a knife through it and you will be surprised at how tender it is. With every bite, the natural sweetness of the pork mingles with the rich, savory sauce. Pure bliss, bite after bite.

The portion is generous, so if you want to try multiple dishes, consider coming with a friend and sharing.

(Note: To order the pork steak, you need to order at least two drinks.)
