History of Utsunomiya Gyoza

Why Utsunomiya became a gyoza town: The ancestors of Utsunomiya gyoza are from former Manchuria

The Imperial Army’s 14th Division had been located in Utsunomiya since September 1909.

The division, which has been dispatched to mainland China many times since ancient times, was stationed in Manchuria in northeastern China during the Sino-Japanese War from 1945, and gyoza became popular among the soldiers at that time. is.

From the Sino-Japanese War to World War II, a total of 8 divisions in addition to the 14th Division from Utsunomiya, with approximately 160,000 soldiers, were stationed on the continent. Many civilians also crossed to China from Utsunomiya.

There, the Japanese people from Utsunomiya were baptized as gyoza.

Afterwards, the repatriates who learned how to make gyoza recreated the taste in Utsunomiya and popularized gyoza.

Cheap and nutritious, gyoza were greatly welcomed as a source of stamina in Utsunomiya, where summers are hot and winters are cold.

Of course, most of the customers are familiar with the taste of authentic gyoza, so their expectations are naturally high, and as a result, they can now enjoy delicious gyoza in Utsunomiya.

Why Japanese Gyoza Contains Garlic

Immediately after the end of the war, dumplings were popularized in Japan by people repatriated from China, and ingredients such as readily available mutton were also used as fillings. At that time, pork was still very valuable.

The reason why Japanese gyoza contains many flavorful vegetables such as chives and green onions, including garlic, is to eliminate the characteristic odor of mutton.

This seems to be the reason why Japanese dumplings use garlic, which is not found in Chinese dumplings.

Although sheep meat is no longer used today, garlic is still widely loved as an ingredient in savory dumplings.

A sacred place for Utsunomiya gyoza that you’ll want to visit again and again.

In the permanent store area, you can enjoy gyoza from well-established, well-established stores, and in the daily store area, you can sample and compare gyoza from many stores. You can enjoy gyoza from 6 stores for 390 yen, which is a great deal.
